Yakutsk – Labynkyr – Okhotsk Journey

Yakutsk - Oymyakon - Tomtor - Lake Labynkyr - Okhotsk Summer Trekking Expedition. With Reindeer Herders.

Yakutsk – Oymyakon – Tomtor – Lake Labynkyr – Arka – Okhotsk Summer Trekking Expedition. From Yakutia to Khabarovsk Krai! With Siberian Reindeer Herders!

Together with herders from the village of Arka, Khabarovsk Krai we’re planning to embark a big overland expedition from Yakutsk to Okhotsk with trekking between the legendary Lake Labynkyr and its home.

Duration: 25 days.
Dates: July – August 2018
Expedition Status: guaranteed irrespective of the quantity of invited travelers.
Group size: 1-5 international travelers + 3 Even guides + 1 herder with his own reindeer caravan + 1 English-speaking guide.
Note: Summer trekking expedition happens once a year. Starts and finishes in Yakutsk, Russia.

Difficulty level: high physical exercise.
Recommended for people, who are physically fit, psychologically healthy, and endurance strong.
Friendly, open-minded trekkers are welcome.

Arka & Forest People

The village of Arka, final destination, is the place Even guides live in. It’s unique. In the Soviet Union time, the settlement was supported pretty well. It was like a big administrative center for reindeer herders’ communities. From here, authorities used to send helicopters with all provision to remote herders’ mountain camps. And here herders received their salaries.

When the USSR collapsed in the 90s, Arka lost support and constant income. It was totally forgotten. Herders were forced to rely on reindeer only, and they stayed in the forest to survive and live their usual life. They are true forest people. Actually, they consider them “forest people.”

Okhotsk Evens lived in the area of expedition for centuries. The first mention of their tribes was noted in the early 17th century. They helped a Russian exploring expedition to make it from Yakutsk to Okhotsk. From 1650 to 1845, they kept possible for traders to deliver goods from Okhotsk sea port to Yakutsk. That route received the name of Yakutsk – Okhotsk Path (Trakt). By the way, it was the major way Yakutsk got provisions that time.

Currently, all that area’s trails are needed by nobody, apart from locals.

When herders need wild onions, which they don’t have in the surroundings of Okhota, Koukhtui and Ulbya rivers, they nomad to Lake Labynkyr. When they wish to eat different types of fishes, they go to great lake to catch huge pikes. In the wintertime, when they need a new portion of basic food, it’s “easier” for them to traverse through snowy mountains, frozen rivers and cold mist to Oymyakon district than to Arka. Just because it’s closer.

Can you imagine what tough life they have? To us, it’s tough, and whatever they do on daily basis, we can call as “real expedition.” To them, it’s routine. They don’t know the other way of life but their ancestors’ only.

You know what? They still rely on their own reindeer. Offered trekking expedition might become a new way to support herders in Okhotsk area.

We travelled that route on reindeer sledges with them in the wintertime. And we fell in love with them.

Yakutsk is one of the oldest towns in Russian Siberia. It was established by Cossacks in 1632 and served as the starting point of all major Far Eastern and Arctic exploration expeditions.

Nowadays, it is the capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The current population is approximately 300 000 people unofficially.

Russia’s Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is immodestly rich in minerals. Diamonds, gold, silver, platinum, gems, semiprecious metals. Yakutia is also famous for talented jewelers. Good news is that you might see all the rich of the region and priceless jewelry at one place.

Yakutsk-based Treasury of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) consists of three rooms. One is dedicated to diamonds, gold and gems. The second is full of exclusive showpieces. You might see, for instance, the item covered with 200 one-carat diamonds and some of the biggest diamonds ever discovered in the region. The third is about Sakha people’s culture and the history of the mining industry.

All visitors are guided by a museum expert who provides stories and unique history facts.

Exhibition is based inside an innovated major entry gate tower of Yakutsk Fortress built in 1632.

A chance to hear a history of Yakutsk since the 17th century and the survival story of the tower through ages.

Mammoth Museum

Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk, Russia. City Tour.

Photographs by Bolot Bochkarev.

Yakutia is rich not only in minerals. Its land keeps the remains of all major species lived in Ice Age. Yakutsk-based Mammoth Museum provides a chance to see the world’s most diverse collection of unique exhibits. Ancient mammoth, ancient bisons, ancient woolly rhino, ancient horse and dog.

Museum experts are paleontologists themselves. They share the knowledge of mammoth study, and they also tell stories of their recent scientific expeditions and show clips of the 3D film. Our guide will translate everything told in Russian into your language.

For instance, it was Mammoth Museum that discovered the already-famous bleeding Big Lyakovsky mammoth in the Arctic of Yakutia, Russia’s Siberia.

During the extraction of the mammoth on Big Lyakhovsky Island, mammoth museum director, Semen Grigoriev, discovered that the Ice Age animal contained blood. Later, the red liquid was proved to have blood remains. Now North-Eastern Federal University (Mammoth Museum is a part of the insititute) cooperates with South-Korean genetic engineers to clone a real mammoth in the near future.

This and other stories you might listen to during your visit.

Yakutsk Permafrost Institute Underground Lab

Yakutsk Permafrost Institute Underground Laboratory

Mobile photographs: Bolot Bochkarev.

Yakutsk-based Permafrost Institute is world famous. It’s one of leading scientific insitutions that study permafrost (frozen soil). Some says, it’s the first one. Unique, as it stands itself on the thick Siberian frozen ground. And it has its own undeground laboratory, where the constant air temperature on its lowest level is -10C all the year around.

Visit to the permafrost institute gives you suffecient answers to questions, “How come the city can stand and develop for centuries on the ground that might be actually affected by the melting process?” and “How can the global “warming” change the structure of permafrost?”, and “Is it possible to drill down to the underground source of drinking water?”, and “Why do mordern town buildings stand on concrete piles?” and etc, etc.

Lecture given by a local scientist provides insight and ancient frozen soil layers demonstrate clearly what we have under feet.

The Kingdom of Permafrost Ice Tunnel inside Chochur Muran Hill

In the above video, Yakutsk mayor Aisen Nikolaev did the Ice Bucket Challenge inside the Kingdom of Permafrost. Please, don’t repeat it.

Photographs: Ivan Dementievskiy (Yukagir mammoth head), Bolot Bochkarev (all others).

The Kingdom of Permafrost Ice Tunnel is the 3rd place to visit during city tour in Yakutsk, Russia. The great thing of that place is that it looks the same as in depicted pictures all the year round.

The constant average temperature inside the tunnel is -8C. When it is +40C outdoor, it’s minus degrees indoor. When it’s -50C, the ice tunnel is felt even warmer. It’s not abnormal fact about the tunnel. That’s all because of permafrost (cryotic soil at or below the freezing point of water).

Apart from huge snowflake-like ice crystals on walls and ceiling, you might see the real head of the mammoth found in the area of Yukagir River in the Arctic (see a photo). It doesn’t need a fridge as a shelter, the head is kept in natural cold condition but, of course, behind the glass door.

For the Kingdom of Permafrost, the best sculptors made fairy-tale characters out of the Lena River ice cubes. Some are dedicated to the “Olonkho” heroic epos that was included in the list of UNESCO’s intangible masterpieces.

Actually, you can try many interesting things inside the venue. Just be ready to experience the cold.
