In the summertime trips to Lena Pillars Nature Park (Russia) might be done on the Lena River directly from Yakutsk or via villages of Bulgunnyakhtah and Elanka.

As you already know, Lena Pillars Nature Park is listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage site. Located on the Eastern bank of the Lena River 180 km south off Yakutsk, capital of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia’s Siberia & Far East.

Five options for the Lena Pillars tour:

  • 3-day cruise on the “Demian Bednyj” ship.
  • Day trip directly from Yakutsk River Port by a speed boat. A private trip on any date on request.
  • Day trip via Bulgunnyakhtakh (111 km south off Yakutsk, and 90 km on the Lena River to Lena Pillars Nature Park) by car and motor boat. A group trip is possible, if travel mates are available.
  • 1- or 2-day trip via Elanka village (155 km south off Yakutsk, and 45 km along the river to Lena Pillars Nature Park) by car and motor boat. With overnight in a wooden guest house in the village of Elanka, if 2-day option is chosen.

Below we offer options for your travel from Yakutsk to Lena Pillars Nature Park (Russia) on the Lena River.

3-Day Yakutsk – Lena Pillars River Cruise [Demian Bednyj Ship]

The “Demian Ship” ship (see the above photo) conducts Lena River cruises from Yakutsk to Lena Pillars Nature Park every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The river cruise ship sails directly to Lena Pillars and stop additional stop on the island in front of stone forest.

Period: June – September 2020.
Ship capacity: 210 passengers.
Cruise duration: 36 hrs (every Monday – Wednesday and Wednesday – Friday) and 46 hrs (Friday – Sunday mostly). Difference is that 46-hr Lena Pillars cruise lasts 2 full days and 2 nights, and the 36-hr one with 1 full day and 2 nights.

Check-in onboard at 19:00. Depature at 20:00. Arrival on the third day at 08:00.

Speed boats: Volzhanka Long Cabin (10-12 seats), and Lazurny 35 (15 seats).
Tour starts and ends at Yakutsk River Port.

Good for a group to experience the long-distance journey on the Lena River and travel straight from Yakutsk River Port to Lena Pillars Nature Park by a speed boat.

Round-trip distance is ~420 km.

Route Map:

Bulgunnyakhtakh is the village located on the Western bank of the Lena River almost in the middle of the way between Yakutsk and Lena Pillars Nature Park (the Eastern bank).

All the nature beauty starts from Bulgunnyakhtakh.

Period: June – September 2020.
Duration: a day trip.
Group size: 1-4 people (each group).

Dates:

  • Private trip on any day on demand.

Travel via Bulgunnyakhtakh is good, if you wish to experience:

  • the combined type of trip – overland and river;
  • feel comfortable during car ride on the asphalt road (after Bulgunnyakhtah, there is dirt road);
  • enjoy 90-km river journey with multiple stops for breaks, grots & ancient rock paintings viewing, Lena Pillars and Siberian sand dunes climbing, swimming, fishing;

Distances to travel:

  • 111 km from Yakutsk to Bulgunnyakhtakh overland by vehicle;
  • 90 km from Bulgunnyakhtakh to Lena Pillars Nature Park along the Lena River by a motor boat.
1-Day Trip via Bulgunnyakhtakh:

Route: Yakutsk – Bulgunnyakhtakh – Tukulany (dunes) – Elanka Rocks (caves, ancient rock paintings) – the Keteme River (caves) – Lena Pillars Nature Park – Yakutsk.

Itinerary

07:00 — Pick up at the place of stay in Yakutsk.
Stop at a grocery store to purchase snacks and drinks.
07:30 — 09:30 — Transfer to Bulgunnyakhtakh by car, 111 km, partly asphalt, partly gravel.
10:00 — Boarding a boat. Start of the river journey along the Lena River toward Lena Pillars Nature Park with stops en route, 90 km.
— Stop at Tukulany Dunes (desert above the Siberian forest and the Lena River) on the eastern bank.
— Boating along Elanka Rocks w/ caves and ancient rock paintings after the village of Elanka on the western bank.
— Stops for observing caves and rock paintings.
— If water level is high, a turn into the Keteme River with rocky banks w/ caves.
— Arrival to Lena Pillars Nature Park by ±12:30. Ascending to the top view point alongside the 2-km trek. Free time. Average time of stay at Lena Pillars is up to 3 hr.
— Way back to Bulgunnyakhtakh, 85 km.
18:30 — 20:00 — Ride back to Yakutsk by car.
±20:00 — Back to hotel in Yakutsk.

Above photographs were taken during the trip from Elanka village to Lena Pillars Nature Park on July 31st, 2013. Even if the Lena River journey took on a rainy, cloudy day, the stone forest looked majestically and mystery (thanks to its ancient history and rock paintings). This is what you’ll see on the last 40-km stretch of your boat/ship trip.

Elanka is the village located on the Western bank of the Lena River. 155 km south off Yakutsk and 35 km to Lena Pillars Nature Park.

Two centuries ago, it was used as the postal base and served by a few families only. Currently, one family lives in there constantly. Lately, Yakutsk city residents built summer houses to spend holidays.

Period: June – September 2020.
Duration: 12-14 hrs.
Group size: 1-4 people.

Travel via Elanka is good, if you wish to:

  • experience overland and river journeys during 2 days;
  • feel the off-road road on the 45-km part Bulgunnyakhtah – Elanka;
  • enjoy the most pictureous stretch on the water way to Lena Pillars Nature Park; it takes 1-hr boating, if not make stops, but you will have stops to view caves and ancient rock paintings;
  • spend night in a new private wooden guest house for 4 people.

Route: Yakutsk – Bulgunnyakhtakh – Elanka – Lena Pillars on the Lena River – Elanka (overnight) – Bulgunnyakhtakh – Yakutsk.

Distances to travel:

– Orto Doydu Zoo (with animals of Siberian wildlife);
– Lunch at roadside café in Pokrovsk town (not included; paid on spot);
– Bulgunnyakhtakh with 2-hr river journey to Tukulany (high sand dunes over forest and the Lena River);
– Mouth of the Buotama River to check with wooden bison, if they are not hidden deep in the forest (animal show up is not guaranteed);
