Standard Tour in the Coldest City on Earth

One week in Yakutsk, the world’s coldest city. Experience extremely cold weather, authentic culture, mammoth-aged animals, delicious national food, blue-eyed sled dogs, a day road trip to Lena Pillars Nature Park, UNESCO’s heritage, Yakutia horses, ice-fishing… Everything what Yakutsk is remarkable for.

Previously, we were often asked to arrange one winter week program in Yakutsk. This winter we decided to compile one big itinerary out of various day activities. Feel free to ask its customization.

Itinerary

Day 1 – ARRIVAL IN YAKUTSK. CITY TOUR.

Arrival in Yakutsk in the early morning (by the sunrise at ±10:00 am). Meeting a guide at the airport. Transfer to a hotel. Free time. 14:00 – Start a city tour from a hotel. Excursion across the Old Town. Drive across the city with stops by frozen ships at the river port, frozen fish & meat market and excursion to the underground lab of the Russian Academy’s Permafrost Institute. 19:00 – Time for dinnner at one of restaurants with a chance to taste national cuisine (not included, paid on spot) in downtown. 21:00 – Transfer to hotel.

Day 2 – YAKUTSK CITY TOUR + SHAMAN TREE SLED DOG SAFARI TOUR.

09:00 – Pick up at a hotel. Drive toward Vilyuyskyj Hwy. 10:00 – Visit to the Atlasovs’ ethnnographic complex. Excursion w/ insight into the traditions and beliefs of the Sakha people. 11:15 – Visit to the Kingdom of Permafrost ice tunnel complex. W/ ice sculptures and ice-related attractions. 12:00 – Arrival to the “Chochur Muran” complex. Lunch at a restaurannt. Preparation for sled dog safari. Putting on warm fur clothes. Short instruction of how to drive dog sleds. 17-km dog sledding to Shaman Tree in forest, 2 hr, with an innstructor on a support snowmobile. At Shaman Tree, a break with hot tea, snacks and time for photographing. When back to the complex, time for dinnner (not incnluded, paid on spot). Milk dishes cooking workshop. ±18:00 – Transfer to hotel.

Day 3 – LENA PILLARS NATURE PARK.

08:00 – Pick up at a hotel. Stop by a grocery store for travelers to buy drinks beverage and snacks. 08:30 – 12:30 – Drive to Batamai village, 200 km. W/ stops en route to observe the caves and ancient paintings of Elanka Rocks. 12:30 – 13:00 – Preparation with warm clothes putting on. 13:00 – 17:00 – Crossing the Lena River toward Lena Pillars Nature Park, 3 km, by foot or snowmobile w/ a passenger sled. Time for ascending a view point on Lena Pillars along 2-km wooden stairs (passible, if stairs are snow free). Warming up and lunch are arranged at a warm tiny house available on one of river banks. ±17:30 – Drive back to Yakutsk. ±21:00 – Back to a hotel.

Day 4 – YAKUTIAN HORSE FARM.

09:00 – Pick up at a hotel. 09:00 – 10:00 – Crossing the Lena River along a 15-km ice road from Yakutsk to Niznyj Bestyakh. Stop on the ice for photographing. 10:00 – 11:00 – Drive to the settlement of Mayya, 35 km. 11:00 – 12:00 – Visit to the place of celebration of the Sakha people’s summer solctice holiday called Yhyakh. Visit to the regional history museum dedicated to the real hero named Manchaary (a local Robin Hood.) 13:00 – 14:00 – Lunch at a horseman’s family’s place in Mayya. 14:00 – 17:00 – Travel to a horse farm through snowy forest and fields. Observing Yakutian horses. Activities with horse, including rides. Meal time at a guest house. ±18:00 – Drive back to Yakutsk. ±21:00 – Back to a hotel.

Day 5 – THE “DRUZHBA” OUTDOOR MUSEUM IN SOTTINTSY + ICE-FISHING ON THE LENA RIVER.

09:00 – Pick up at a hotel. Drive to the coal mining town of Kangalassy, 40 km, 1 hr. Visit to the view point on Kangalassy Cape, 30 min. Drive to Druzhba Museum with crossing the Lena River from Kangalassy to Ogorotakh village along the ice road, 20 km, 1 hr. ±11:30 – Walk excursion across the “”Druzhba”” outdoor history & architecture museum located in the place of where Yakutsk was initially founded in 1632. Observing the Sakha people’s old living houses w/ household utensils and decoration. 13:00 – Lunch. 14:00 – Drive to the Lena River. Ice-fishing. Drilling holes, setting up a tent with a stove, ice fishing. Snacks, hot tea. 19:00 – Drive back to Yakutsk. ±20:00 – Back to a hotel.

Day 6 – YAKUTSK. SHOPPING.

10:00 – 13:00 – Shopping in the city (by car, w/ a guide). 13:00 – Time for lunch (not included, paid on spot). Free time.

Day 7 – DEPARTURE.

Transfer hotel to airport.

What warm clothes to wear?

– Thermo underwear (woolen, preferably);
– sweater (thick woolen)
– scarf (woolen)
– warm pants (for instance, texapore or thick jeanse);
– warm high boots (uggi/valenki/fur boots);
– dawn parka with hood;
– fur hats;
– gloves.

Do you provide warm clothes?

We can provide visitors with the package of warm clothings. Available for rental.

Is there any option for dog sledding

Is it possible to shorten itinerary?

Yes. Everything depends on what you wish and the quantity of available days for Yakutsk.

What month is it better to experience the extreme cold weather?

Actually from the early December till the end of February. According to our observation, it’s always the middle of December, the middle of January and the first two weeks of February with the lowest temps.

Is it possible to extand Yakutsk winter tour with more trips?

Yes, sure. Why not to travel further to Oymyakon, Verkhoyansk, Tiksi, Mirny, Magadan?!
